Thetis

Achilles' mother, eldest of the Nereids.

She deserves none of the crap she gets. Thetis found Hephaestus after he had been tossed from Olympus and helped to nurse him back to health with Eurynome (She also helped young Dionysus after he was banished) and grew up along side him.
Unfortunately, she grew up to be pretty, and both Zeus and Poseidon wanted to sleep with her. Hephaestus, knowing what tended to happen to the unfortunate victims of Zeus and Poseidon, convinced them to leave her alone by telling his father and uncle that there was a prophecy that Thetis' children would be much greater than their father. Zeus and Poseidon quickly dropped the idea of sleeping with Thetis...But became rather worried about who Thetis WOULD sleep with. They decided that the only way to be certain that Thetis' children wouldn't be threats was to have her sleep with a human.
Thetis and all the Nereids were not to keen on mortals, or even going near them, so Zeus and Poseidon (With Proteus) helped the mortal Peleus to rape Thetis. They considered that good as set, but to be sure they forced Thetis to be married to Peleus. Nine months later, little Achilles was born.

I love Thetis very much, but alas, old picture. This is another one on the "I will update this one eventually" pile. She is wonderful.
